My Story

About me

Theo Mutesa

My name is Theophile Mutesa but everyone calls me Theo. I’m a passionate trainer and youtuber.

I moved back to Rwanda in early 2019. I moved back to my motherland to follow my dream of opening my own gym and help contribute to the development of Rwanda.

So far it's going great, despite the challenges of this pandemic. I recently started working for different companies in  Rwanda, to diversify my income and increase my network reach. Connect with me on LinkedIn

My growing up story

I was born in Rwanda and in 1994 my family and I fled the country because of the genocide that was going on. We lived in DRC (formally Zaire) & Zambia for a while before finally coming to the Netherlands in 1999. From there on I have lived the life of a full (black) Dutch man.

In 2015, I went back to Rwanda for a six months internship. I interned at the Ministry of Health of Rwanda, at a department of Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC). It was an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel around the country and see a lot of Rwanda. It is during this long stay that I realized that Rwanda - the country of a thousand hills - has a thousand challenges and a thousand business opportunities. For the first time in my life, I felt very connected to my birth country and I was determined to contribute to the rise of Rwanda.

The first thing I did was, share my experiences of the 'new and unseen' Rwanda with friends and family through youtube. This went very well and I got a lot of praise from many people around the world.

For a short while, I helped my brother buy dashiki’s in Rwanda and sell them in the Netherlands. This project went well in the beginning but stranded short after due to lack of enthusiasm. But one thing I never lacked enthusiasm for was working out. And opening my own gym is a lifelong dream of mine

So I looked whether I can open my own gym in Rwanda. But I soon realized that finding good and affordable gym equipment was not easy in Rwanda. So I started building my own squat rack from strong wood, with the intend to sell. That project stranded as well when I finished my internship and returned to the Netherlands.

After my return to the Netherlands, I continued creating more content on my youtube channel. I started teaching Kinyarwanda for beginners, those videos have gained over 60 thousand views from all over the world.

Now I'm done with school and I want to do more. I want to follow my true dream and open a CrossFit gym in Kigali and contribute to the growth and development of Rwanda.
